In today’s world, fandom has shifted from being a safe haven to becoming more of a toxic social phenomenon. Arguments, bullying, racism, sexism, and other forms of hate have led to fandom’s decline, taking away from the creativity that once defined it. It’s time to lay to rest the film franchises, shows, and public figures that have suffered from toxic fandom.
The candlelight vigil was created to bring awareness to the fan communities and public figures that are particularly divisive in our culture. Many fan bases today suffer from issues that harm relationships within and outside their communities. Each candle in this project is uniquely designed, reflecting the most debated, hated, or “worshiped” elements associated with specific individuals, series, or franchises that have become toxic. The final presentation of the candles resembles a shrine, meant to spotlight the excessive adoration given to things originally intended for entertainment.
